JUNE IN LES JARDINS GAMELIN: PIKNIC ÉLECTRONIK, URBAN AGRICULTURE AND ALL KINDS OF SUMMER FUN
_Press release - For immediate release_
Montreal, June 8, 2015 – In June, Les Jardins Gamelin will keep up the pace set at the beginning of spring by bringing Montrealers an exciting program featuring Piknic Électronik in the Quartier des Spectacles, lunchtime concerts, public speaking and dancing in the evening, outdoor karaoke, fitness breaks and much more. The Comptoir des Jardins Gamelin is still the city’s hottest patio, complete with summery local fare. Every day from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., the gardens in Place Émilie-Gamelin are the place to be to have fun, socialize and relax.
PIKNIC ÉLECTRONIK IN THE CITY
On Friday, June 5, electronic music filled the air in Les Jardins Gamelin. Piknic Électronik and the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership will co-present two more evenings in the Jardins, on July 16 and August 6. Fans and the newcomers are welcome to dance for free to the beats of DJs.
LUNCH ON THE LAWN
On June 4, during Quebec’s annual disability awareness week (Semaine des personnes handicapées du Québec) and for the ninth year in a row, Différents comme tout le monde holded its annual party in celebration of difference to promote solidarity and tolerance. On June 7, Le Randolph presented a playful picnic to kick off the first annual Fête mondiale du jeu (world games day) with giant games, traditional games, board games, speed and dexterity games, quizzes and more. On June 11, Culture Montréal invites all Montrealers to a picnic with special activities.
WORLD MUSIC IN THE JARDINS
The evening of June 17, Joyce N’Sana, a singer-songwriter originally from Congo and the winner of the Quartier des Spectacles coup de cœur award presented by the 2014 edition of Vision Diversité’s Vitrines des musiques locales métissées, will take the Jardins Gamelin stage to show off her remarkably powerful voice. Come hear her sing a sweet mix of soul, gospel and reggae in French, English, Creole and Congolese languages Lari and Lingala.
JUNE GET-TOGETHERS
Many free activities, presented by the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership and Pépinière & co. in collaboration with several partners, are returning in June. They include giant karaoke presented by Création dans la Chambre every Sunday afternoon; the Alors on danse series of swing and salsa lessons; the Midis de l’Escalier lunchtime concerts and Samedis de la relève shows by up-and-coming musicians every Saturday; and on Thursdays, Soul Lunch with Andy Williams, the DJ from The Goods Soundsystem.
June in Les Jardins Gamelin also includes some exciting new activities. Mondays at lunchtime, enjoy high-energy dancing with RISE BEAT. Every Tuesday (starting June 9) at 7 p.m., the Mardis oratoires present displays of the oratorical arts from improv to slam to comedy. Musical activities include les Soirées à Pelland, where music lovers are invited to discover Montreal’s top producers, and Turntable Nights, where the public can bring their own records for DJs to spin.
On Mondays at lunchtime and Wednesdays at dinnertime, Les Jardins Gamelin will become a massive outdoor gym where anyone who enjoys working out can take part in Cardio FIT session with Cardio Plein Air. And, every Tuesday at noon as part of the Laid-back lunch series of activities, everyone is welcome to participate in outdoor yoga sessions with Yo-Yoga.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, Sentier urbain, the organization behind the urban agriculture activities in Les Jardins Gamelin, welcomes the public to guided tours of the gardens on the site. Everyone is invited to learn about the techniques of urban agriculture, and the different plants and their medicinal and culinary properties. Every Sunday, there will be workshops (in French) on such topics as urban agriculture basics, container gardening and managing insects.
The last week of the month in Les Jardins Gamelin will include both regularly scheduled activities and preparations for Montréal Complètement Cirque. The circus festival will present a new show in the Jardins from July 2 to 12.
Last but not least, Les Jardins Gamelin are an essential stop for everyone who enjoys the visual arts, especially anyone who has not yet had the chance to marvel at 1.26 by American artist Janet Echelman. The monumental sculpture suspended over the Jardins, illuminated at night, will remain on display until October 4.
All activities are free. The full program for Les Jardins Gamelin is attached. Regular updates: www.quartierdesspectacles.com and facebook.com/LesJardinsGamelin
