The Esplanade Tranquille is always abuzz with activity! This 1,890 m2 public square and its adjacent pavilion are bustling with activity in summer and winter alike.

Named in memory of the Librairie Tranquille once located on the site, the square is adorned with playful furniture under the hot Montreal summer sun, and becomes a large urban terrace where it’s a pleasure to stroll. Its modular layout also makes it an ideal space for outdoor shows and other festival events.

When the temperature drops, the Esplanade Tranquille turns into a large, safe and welcoming refrigerated skating rink for the whole family and for groups who want to make the most of winter. The pavilion, located on the west side of the esplanade, is teeming with activity: there’s a restaurant, café, large lounge, workroom, games rental counter and self-service library.

A RICH CULTURAL PROGRAM

A cultural hub within the Quartier, the Esplanade Tranquille not only offers its own program of shows, interactive installations, neighbourhood parties and artistic workshops, but it’s also one of the outdoor sites for major Montreal festivals. Throughout the summer, the site hosts the Francos de Montréal, Festival nternational de Jazz de Montréal, Festival international Nuits d'Afrique, Fierté Montréal, ItalFest, MUTEK, Estival du nouveau cinéma and many others. In winter, LUMINO sets up its installations. In just a few years of existence, this downtown nerve center has become a cultural must-see.
