A product of the merger of the Bibliothèque nationale du Québec and the Archives nationales du Québec in 2006, this Crown corporation gathers and shares the essence of Quebec’s history and culture, while opening a window on knowledge from around the world. It makes millions of documents of all kinds (books, magazines and newspapers, films, music, images, archives, etc.) accessible to the general public—on site and online—and ensures they are preserved for the benefit of future generations. The institution is also responsible for promoting the preservation and accessibility of private archives and, to this end, exercises the powers set out in the Archives Act. Through its actions, the BAnQ contributes to making Quebec a society where lifelong learning is both possible and encouraged. To achieve this, it relies on the support of the Friends of BAnQ and the BAnQ Foundation, as well as a wide range of partners such as the City of Montreal and numerous public organizations.
