July in Les Jardins Gamelin : Thrilling streetdance nights with 100Lux

The 10th season of Les Jardins Gamelin is in full swing, continuing until September 15 with an extensive free program with something for every taste. In July, Wednesday evenings will be irresistibly danceable thanks to an all-new streetdance series. Streetdance nights with 100Lux will cater to dancers of every level and feature exciting battles!

Lessons for all

Wednesdays: July 3 at 6 p.m. and July 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Two free introductory lessons will be given to anyone who’s intrigued by the captivating world of streetdance. With the 100Lux team, participants of all ages and levels of dance experience will have the chance to learn streetdance basics with some of the scene’s best-known professionals. The July 3 session will focus on house, a dance with roots in the electronic underground scenes of Chicago and New York. On July 24, dancers will discover waacking, which emerged in the 1970s in Los Angeles, inspired by funk and disco. After each lesson, DJs Pattes de Velours and The Vibes (July 3) and Paolo (July 24) will get everybody up on the Jardins Gamelin dancefloor.

Thrilling competitions

Wednesdays, July 17 and 31, 6 p.m.

On these two exceptional evenings, visitors will discover the diversity and creativity of streetdance culture with electrifying break battles. The dancers of 100Lux will challenge each other, freestyling to spontaneous musical selections. On July 17, U.n.I. Vibe Collective will stage a two-against-two battle with pre-set teams that will be mixed up to create new dynamics, with beats provided by DJ Jungle. July 31, Angella Doré will present a breakdance battle in which dancers will improvise for just 16 beats, to the sounds of DJ Benny Lava and drummer Seyjii Schultz.

About 100Lux

100Lux was founded in 2012 by Axelle Munezero and Martine Bureau. Its mission is to provide professional advancement opportunities for Montreal’s street dancers. The organization federates and supports the city’s different streetdance communities and puts these long-marginalized cultural expressions in the spotlight. Streetdance is a set of dances (popping, locking, breaking, hip hop, krump, waacking, ballroom(voguing), house and dancehall) that have evolved in the streets and clubs, outside formal dance studios and institutional structures. In the spring of 2015, Place Émilie-Gamelin showed a new face to Quartier des Spectacles residents and visitors with Les Jardins Gamelin, open from May to September.
