It no longer needs an introduction. The Place des Festivals is the largest outdoor space available for the festivals and major events that have been feeding the vibe of the Quartier des Spectacles since 2009. At once a public square and an open-air concert venue, it’s lined with four large columns featuring stage lighting, while its parterre welcomes festival-goers celebrating the diversity of music from Montreal and around the world. Outside the festival, visitors can relax and enjoy Canada’s largest set of animated and interactive fountains, complete with 235 water jets! In winter, festivals, events and light installations delight young and old alike.
Home to major events
Montreal is renowned for its large-scale, free, open-air shows in the heart of downtown. Since 2009, the Place des Festivals has been the venue for some of the largest concerts and shows of their kind, including the Francos de Montréal, the Festival international de jazz de Montréal, the First Peoples’ Festival, the Festival TransAmériques, MONTREAL EN LUMIÈRE and many others. Whether it’s a large, elevated stage for a wild rock concert, or a participatory dance performance on the pavement, the configurations are countless, and the space adapts to the most inventive ideas of the artists who use it. If summer is rife with major events on the square, winter also has its place under the sun. From January to December, Montreal is a festival town.
Mellowing out on the Place des Festivals
The Place des Festivals isn’t just a place to party, is it?
It’s also a place of relaxation for Montrealers and visitors—a spot to take a well-deserved break, to grab a bite with friends, or simply to stroll and take time to feel the upbeat vibe of downtown.
And let’s not forget the pleasure of watching the playful array of fountains!
They’re a must! Designed by Quebec architects Patkau and Croft-Pelletier, the fountains combine water jets, light effects and digital effects to create a captivating visual spectacle. They’re playful and inviting: little ones love them. And grown-ups too!
