The St. James United Church in Montreal, built in 1889 on plans by none other than Alexander Francis Dunlop, has been designated a Canadian National Historic Monument and a religious building of Quebec heritage value. Square James was designed by Claude Cormier. The main organ is made up of 64 stops on four keyboards and approximately 6000 pipes. The main organ, originally Wadsworth (1888), has been remade over the years by Warren (1909), Casavant (1938) and Letourneau (2012). The mechanical chamber organ was made by Quebec organ builder Karl Wilhelm in 1978.
St. James’s Church hosts many concerts and other cultural events throughout the year, including the annual MusOrgue Festival. Renowned organists such as E. Power Biggs, Simon Preston, Fernando Germani and André Maréchal have performed at St. James. Raymond Daveluy and Bernard Lagacé made their Montreal debut at this venue, now under the musical direction of Dr. Alexandra Fol.
